Christmas in Cairns means 30 degree mornings, mangoes at Rusty's Markets, swimming in the Esplanade Lagoon before breakfast, and a reef trip on Christmas Eve still warm enough for a singlet at sunset. From Coral Towers Holiday Suites, the lights, the dining, the markets and the water are all a waterfront walk or short drive south.

Here is how the month actually works: the events that kick it off, the restaurants that book out, and what is open on Christmas Day itself.

What happens in Cairns in the lead-up to Christmas?

Cairns does not do Christmas the way southern cities do. There are no frost-covered windows or last-minute coat purchases.

Instead, Cairns Regional Council runs a free programme. Its confirmed 2026 dates:

  • Christmas Tree Light-Up, Sunday 29 November, 5pm to 7pm at Lagoon Plaza, with the tree switched on at 7pm.
  • Christmas Light Lane, a new lighting trail from Lagoon Plaza towards the Eastern Event Lawn, on 12 evenings between 29 November and 24 December.
  • Carols in the Park, Sunday 13 December, at Munro Martin Parklands, not the Lagoon. Gates open at 4pm and the show runs 6:30pm to 8:30pm.

From Coral Towers, Lagoon Plaza is about 2.3 kilometres south, a 30 minute walk along the Esplanade or a five minute drive; Munro Martin Parklands is about 25 minutes on foot. Walk down after dinner and follow the lights.

For families, the Cairns Aquarium runs school holiday programmes through December, and the aquarium itself is open daily from 9:30am to 3:30pm including all public holidays. It sits at 5 Florence Street, about a 25 minute walk from the front door.

Which restaurants should you book early for Christmas in Cairns?

This is where December in Cairns catches people out. The city has strong dining, and the good places book out early, particularly for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day sittings.

If you are arriving in the second half of December and you want a table at one of the waterfront restaurants, book before you arrive.

Dundee's Waterfront Dining on Marlin Parade is a Cairns institution, serving Australian seafood and game in a dining room that overlooks Trinity Inlet.

It is a five minute drive or 35 minute walk south of Coral Towers, and it opens on Christmas Day with a pre-paid set lunch from 11:30am.

Ochre Restaurant at Harbour Lights, 6/1 Marlin Parade, is another that deserves early booking. It has been operating on the Cairns waterfront for over 25 years, serving modern Australian cuisine built around native ingredients.

Guests keep mentioning the tasting plates and the crocodile dishes, and the balcony tables overlooking the marina. Ochre is closed on Sundays and Christmas Day, so aim for Christmas Eve.

For something less formal, The Pier at the Cairns Marlin Marina is open seven days and houses a cluster of cafes, bars and restaurants with water views.

It is about a 35 minute walk south of Coral Towers along the Esplanade boardwalk. No booking needed for most of the casual spots, but each venue sets its own Christmas hours.

The practical rule: book Christmas Eve and Christmas Day tables as soon as your dates are set, and check the venue is open that day.

What is actually open on Christmas Day in Cairns?

More than you might expect, but less than a normal day.

The Esplanade Lagoon is open on Christmas Day, 6am to 9pm under council's public holiday hours, with lifeguards patrolling whenever it is open. By mid-morning, the Lagoon and the surrounding lawns fill with families, towels and portable speakers.

The Cairns Aquarium is open every public holiday at its standard hours, 9:30am to 3:30pm, with last admission at 2:30pm. If you have young children and need a structured activity on Christmas afternoon, this is the reliable option.

Supermarkets, bottle shops and most retail close on Christmas Day. If you are self-catering at Coral Towers, stock up on the 24th.

Rusty's Markets runs Friday to Sunday (5am to 4pm Friday and Saturday, 5am to 3pm Sunday).

Christmas Day falls on a Friday this year, but Rusty's had not published holiday hours at the time of writing, so shop the weekend of 18 to 20 December. The mangoes, lychees and tropical fruit in December at Rusty's are worth the early trip alone.

Reef Magic Cruises runs to its outer reef pontoon daily, public holidays included; other operators set their own holiday schedules, so check before you book.

The Cairns Marlin Marina is a 35 minute walk or five minute drive south, and the Reef Magic crossing to the outer Great Barrier Reef takes around 90 minutes each way. December water visibility is typically excellent and the water temperature sits near 29 degrees.

How does the weather shape a December stay?

December is the start of wet season in Far North Queensland, but it plays out differently to what most visitors expect.

Mornings are often warm and sunny, with temperatures between 25 and 31 degrees.

The rain keeps no timetable. Some days bring a short, sharp downpour that cools everything and leaves the air smelling like frangipani; council notes wet-season rain can also set in for several days. Keep an eye on the Bureau of Meteorology forecast.

Stinger season generally runs from November to May. The patrolled northern beaches (Palm Cove, Trinity Beach, Ellis Beach) have stinger enclosures.

But council says these are not 100 percent stinger proof and beaches close when stingers are present, so swim inside the nets, follow lifeguard signage and check Surf Life Saving Queensland's beach report for closures. The Esplanade Lagoon is stinger-free year-round.

For guests staying at Coral Towers, the practical adjustment is simple: check the forecast each morning, keep plans flexible, and have one indoor option on standby.

The Cairns Aquarium, the Cairns Art Gallery on Abbott Street (free entry, air-conditioned, open daily except Christmas Day), and the shopping at Cairns Central are all within a 35 minute walk.

The Daintree Rainforest, about 1 hour 45 minutes' drive north to the river ferry, is at its most spectacular in wet season.

Waterfalls run hard, the canopy is dense, and the wildlife is active. If you are driving up to Cape Tribulation for the day, December is when the rainforest earns its name.

FAQs

Is Cairns busy at Christmas?

Yes. December is peak season in Far North Queensland, and accommodation books out early, particularly the week between Christmas and New Year. If you are planning a stay over that period, booking by October is a good idea. The trade-off is warm water, long daylight hours, and a city that genuinely comes alive.

What is open in Cairns on Christmas Day?

The Esplanade Lagoon is open 6am to 9pm on public holidays, with lifeguards patrolling while it is open. The Cairns Aquarium opens every day of the year, 9:30am to 3:30pm. Dundee's on the Waterfront serves a pre-paid Christmas lunch from 11:30am; Ochre is closed, so book any Christmas Day meal well ahead.

Can you swim in Cairns in December?

Yes. The Esplanade Lagoon is open daily with lifeguards on patrol, and the water sits around 29 degrees in December. At the northern beaches, swim inside the stinger enclosure at a patrolled beach; council says the nets do not eliminate the risk, so follow lifeguard signage and check for closures first.

Does it rain a lot in Cairns in December?

It can. December starts the wet season and is usually wetter than average. Rain might be a short, heavy shower or a steady fall lasting days, so check the Bureau of Meteorology forecast and keep an indoor option up your sleeve. The showers keep the rainforest lush and the waterfalls flowing.

How far is the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns?

Reef trips leave from the Reef Fleet Terminal at the Marlin Marina, 2.5 kilometres south of Coral Towers: a five minute drive or 35 minute walk. Reef Magic Cruises runs daily, public holidays included, and the crossing to the outer reef takes about 90 minutes each way. December conditions are generally calm and warm.

Christmas in Cairns is best when you are close enough to walk to everything. Book your December stay at Coral Towers Holiday Suites, where the lights, the Lagoon and the reef marina are a waterfront walk away. Check apartment availability for the dates that suit.
